Adobe director 3d game

Director hasn't seen a substantial update in quite some time, and with the new Flash 3D features, it's looking like a very dead end. If you're looking at 3D authoring right now, check out Unity.

Naresh Gupta, Senior Vice President, Print and Publishing at Adobe noted, "With the new Director 11, users can unleash their creative capabilities and broaden their market reach with less effort, producing more engaging multimedia applications in less time.

Historically, the Director application was utilized in the creation of the vast majority of educational CDROMs, due to its ease of use and extensive range of features, with both Apple and Microsoft operating systems.

The latest release was designed to include a flexible and easy-to-use authoring environment, thus enabling multimedia designers, animators and developers to create more comprehensive interactive applications, games, e-learning and other simulation based products. Director may be used for multimedia applications, such as virtual architectural walkthroughs and product demonstrations; however, the new version can also create hardware-accelerated 3D games.

These added bonuses are designed to simplify adding characteristics, such as shadowing and glow, to text or images. An enhanced script browser is included, for breaking out the code and snippets, with drag and drop capability — slated to be a programming time saver. Director 11 enhances the ability to develop fast action 3D interactive games and virtual products, with cost efficiency, cross-platform compatibility and browser plug-in penetration superior to other authoring environments on the market.

Allen Partridge, the Technology Evangelist for Adobe Director and owner of Insight Interactive Games, demonstrated a realistic, fast-action motorcycle game, noting that Director is poised to provide much faster game development months vs. An estimated half billion computers have the Shockwave plug-in required to view Director content in a web browser.

Games creator Caspian Learning, uses Director for its simulation games designed to solve learning issues, due to its web capability, ease of development, and stability.

Evans built SocioTown as an interactive social network, for casual players that play around minutes a day. The game includes tools to help track friends, and interactions with players and non-players, as well as having the ability to map the social network. Past interactions are recorded into memory, to enable discretionary actions later.

Other features of the game include Street Boxing, which allows players to compete against one another; game play for characters, such as checkers; and shopping. Missions in process include a laser tag event and the ability to catch bugs.

Well, i won't argue against that Director could improve a lot in the quality aspect regarding the latest release but it also depends on what you're doing.

A lot of stuff works but there are also some very annoying things which do not work the way they should and which are important but guess what i could say the same about Unity in other aspects but less :O. Curious to see how stable Flash will be once the 3d aspect will be exposed more.

Maybe you would be very suprised by what already is beeing made with the existing solution, especially in the non gaming sector for product presentation. No glitches and runs on each system. Joined: Jul 26, Posts: I hate shockwave mainly because is just a "toy project" for Adobe.

In my vision as ex-customer Adobe owns shockwave and keep it alive but don't want to spend money, invest or at least sell or toss away, may be because Adobe thinks shockwave is not lucrative, strategic or simply have a ill felling toward this program.

Joined: Dec 10, Posts: PsychicParrot At least in this thread, your post seems like an overreaction. Did I miss something? I like his demos, too. Which one? Yours this time? I might be wrong but were't you also behaving a little bit ignorant for several times on the director list when some of us were quite happy with the existance of Unity already, putting a lot of free time into it for debugging and trying to make reasonable suggestions based on their experience , discussing alternatives and already foresaw it's potential?

Actually when thinking about it i can remember quite some interesting comments on this subject. Anyway not my fault that you weren't that quick those days or maybe went the smoother let's wait till there is a v2 route. I never was on of those developers who were loyal to a product for just the sake of beeing loyal as i have to make my living with it and when there is a serious problem with a prodcut i have to get this sorted out for me.

If you think developers who are trying to help building a reasonable solution which they can use for a their living and b having fun with, has something to do with trolling then well that's you interpretation. Tom was in a position which comes with responsibility and he was selling those crap which was happening with Director to us for all those years.

Now laughing about it feels inappropriate. Regarding your technical points there do exist large 3d projects which are still beeing developed with Director because a there exists such a large code base already, b the client doesn't want to pay for the conversion and change their workflows c the client doesn't see a real benefit because whilst the new technology brings him several advantages it also comes with certain disadvantages and due to certain aspects this sadly, for non gaming content, has been the cases for several times.

That's part of the reason why i'm trying to get things through which are important from my point of view. Not that i'm fond of Flash personally but calling Flash a joke regarding it's 3d aspect seems to be more motivated through a lack of experience in this field.

Flash and 3d is beeing used for simple to medium projects in the 3d online world already and there do exist better and faster custom implementations like Papervision.

The reason why it's done in Flash simply is because the Plugin is working crossplatform and can provide a good quality regardless of your graphics card on every system and it has this large installed userbase of a well accepted plugin. Unity runs very smooth on the Mac paltform but for the most important market ,the windows platform, there sadly still exist glitches here and there, also on high end cards. Of course that is a different kind of 3d than if you were using the terrain engine for instance but in the fileds where you can opperate with 3d in Flash it does a good job and the 3d aspect in Flash in the future will more likely enhance instead of worsen.

Oh and a caustic unclear response to aaronsullivan: Thanks! PsychicParrot: thanks for offering some defense for a long and tired effort I have no interest in pursuing. Taumel: : Live long and prosper. HiggyB , Oct 7,
