I have nod32 installed as my antivirus software and i have tried switching this off to connect, and that doesn't work, I have turned off windows firewall - and checked the list of blocked sites, I have turned off the fishing filter and all add ons on both IE and firefox - none of these attempts had any effect.

Based on my experience and all the troubleshooting results, we have eliminated almost all common factors that may cause this websites viewing issue. To continue troubleshooting, I suggest you create a new user account for the Windows Vista system and check if the new user still experience the same issue.

Please create a new account with Administrator privilege and login with the new user to have a test. However, if the issue still persists, it should be a unstable network connection issue when your computer is trying to connect these websites.

To resolve this issue thoroughly, I suggest you upgrade to ADSL high speed Internet connection instead of dial-up modem connection. Let's try the following steps to troubleshoot it:. To do this, follow these steps:. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification https for all sites in this zone check box. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, clicking Add after you type each address:.

Click OK two times. If you are not located in a corporate network, or if you do not use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, clear the WinHTTP proxy configuration. Open Internet Explorer. Quit Internet Explorer. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. Type the following commands. Step 3: Test in Safe Mode. Perform the following steps to go to Safe Mode with Networking to see if this issue occurs again.

NOTE: Safe Mode loads the minimum number of required basic device drivers and system services to start the system. Programs located in the Startup Program group are not started.

So this will be very helpful for us to narrow down the root cause. By the way, is the computer in a domain environment or a stand-alone computer? Please check if there is any gateway server above this computer that is preventing it from viewing specific websites. Regarding the second problem that Windows Update cannot download new updates, I suggest we monitor it after the first issue has been resolved.

If the Windows Update issue persists, you may need to submit a new thread for this particular issue as we usually focus on one specific issue in one thread. Thanks for your understanding. Robbin Meng. Microsoft Online Community Support. I opened the command prompt as a user and an administrator and typed the command however it was not recognised.

I restarted in normal mode, logged onto the internet and still I could not connect to the web pages. In answer to your question about being a stand alone coputer, I think it is, it connects directly to my isp via a modem, there are no other computers in the network.

I have connected my xp machine to the same modem and had no problems accessing any web pages - I think that this means that if there is a gateway above the computer it is not affecting the web pages that I want to visit. I am sorry that modem device does not support to dial up to the Internet under Safe Mode with Networking. If you are using NIC to access the Internet directly, it will works. Therefore, let's try the following steps instead to continue troubleshooting this issue.

Let's rename the old HOST file. Click the Start button, click Search, and then click Files and Folders. Click All files and Folders and then type the following in the Named box:. Tried all your suggestions again and still no luck! Logged onto the machine tonight - tried to start Firefox however received an error messgae, the details are posted below. So instead I went for IE - IE now works perfectly with access to all sites that I previously could not get to - do you have any suggestions as to why this might be and how I can get the two browsers working side by side?

Hi Chris,. I am glad to know finally the IE browser works again after our troubleshooting. Actually, we are not familiar with 3rd party program troubleshooting, however, based on experience, this kind of application crash issue may be caused by spyware infect or the programs is somehow corrupted. Generally, we can try following steps:. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. After the scan is finished, click "Next", click the check boxes on the "Critical Objects" tab to select them, click "Next", and then click OK to confirm the removal. One week ago, both browsers stopped opening web pages. Once again, I didn't change anything before this occurred. I have tried connecting the laptop to the router both via wireless and using a hardwired network cable connection - but the browsers still won't work.

That and the XP machine connecting via wireless and operating properly seems to eliminate wireless as the problem. Last weekend, IE started giving me the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". The laptop sends and receives email perfectly, and checking the network and sharing center, I'm connected both Locally and to the Internet.

IPv4 connectivity says Internet. IPv6 says Limited, but I undstand that doesn't matter. I definitely have Internet connectivity, but neither browser will open web pages! I believe that the problem is unique to the laptop, since it's the only one of two wireless machines having this problem. I also believe it's something basic since the browsers don't work either hardwired or wireless. I've wrestled with this for hours. I've run complete system scans with Symantec and I don't find any problems.

Each machine addressing the router has a different IP number, do I don't believe there are IP conflicts. Can anyone give me a clue on this? Repeated searches on multiple sites haven't yielded advice that has enabled me to resolve this. TerryNet Terry.

Joined Mar 23, Messages 81, I think Symantec Endpoint is a security suite, not just an anti-virus. Try the below repairs and if they don't get you working uninstall Symantec Endpoint. All three resets done as per instructions. System rebooted - no joy. Symantec Endpoint removed. Browsers cannot open web pages, although the laptop is still on the Internet. What's next on the list? Perhaps reset all Windows security stuff to default? Edit - I've set the Windows Security Suite to "autopilot" as much as possible - but since it can't access the Internet via browser, some stuff won't update.

I don't think anything in Windows would do this unless you've figured out how to activate the Vista firewall's outgoing protection it's disabled by default.

Paste the results in a message here. If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access. Here 'tis As expected that looks perfectly good. Try Safe Mode with Networking to see if browsers work there. No connectivity for either browser in Safe Mode.

Good news - both settings are exactly as you suggest.
